What’s an Indie?

I get asked this question a lot. What is an Indie? I always respond that it’s the place you want people to know about so they stay busy but you don’t want them to stay so busy you can’t get a table. I have a few I’ll be writing about in the weeks ahead but I want to know what you think?

Bottom line for me, if it’s a franchise it’s definitely no. But if it’s a regional chain like Ivar’s or Pappa’s Seafood, I’m not so sure. They’re not everywhere. They’re not franchised, but there is more than one location. Pappa’s is especially tricky because the corporate parent owns many different restaurants across the country but they’re not franchises. Does that detract from their Indie Status? What do you think?

Begin Again

When I started this blog, I had hoped to be on the verge of something wonderful. Traveling, exploring and literally tasting all the world had to offer. Instead, life had other plans and the last several years have been, well, difficult. And “difficult” is quite an understatement.

But I’m still kicking and I am still excited to share the Indies of the world with the curious and soon-to-be-loyal readers of this blog. And I hope that the readers of this blog will share their stories with me too. Where are your favorite places? Why? What drives YOU to take the road less traveled? If you could go anywhere for food, music, or adventure RIGHT now, where would you go?

Let’s talk about it.

Well, where do you eat then?

I get a lot of strange looks when I tell people that I don’t eat at chain restaurants.  A few naive souls have even asked this question:  “Well, where do you eat then?  Fast food?”

To be honest,  I will hit up a fast food place in an extreme (6 year old whining incessantly) emergency but I avoid them.  I have even bid farewell to my old friend Subway in favor of a tiny, local sandwich and coffee shop, Lake City Perk.  They have a super small menu but their sandwiches are tasty and I’m supporting my local economy 100% instead of 100% less franchise fees, etc.  It just makes me feel good.

So where else do I eat?  Well, I look for the tiny places with full parking lots.  The local CVB membership is usually a solid place to start research too.  Places that are willing to join the CVB are committed to their own success and to the local business community.  This is win + win.  In some cases, the dues are a little steep so being able to afford them implies a level of success which means the food is probably good too.  This is just a hypothesis, mind you, but so far it’s working out pretty well.

I am also adventurous.  I don’t judge the book solely by its cover.  I forget the name of it but one of the best places I went in El Paso was a little hole in the wall across from the El Paso Chile Company (another indie!  Their black bean dip is the best!).

The point of this is that finding great indie food requires a little leg work and careful selection but you’ll never be disappointed if you take the time and take a chance on indies.

Do You Miss Customer Service?

In spite of all the books, blogs, seminars, think tanks, etc., good customer service is a dying art. Internal and external customers everywhere lament the prevalence of poor customer service and yet, it never seems to change. In the face of economic pressures, the mom and pops known for service and knowledge fall by the wayside in favor of the big box, low think, no service retailer, restaurant, etc. Every kind of business has a giant but how many of those giants are known for price, selection AND service? I can’t think of one.

If you are bemoaning the loss of service but spending your time and money at the big chains, you’ve done this to yourself. This blog is going to show you what you’re missing. Stay tuned.

Why Indies?

Obviously, I have a great love of the unique and different.  But more than that, choosing an independent business gives 100% of your financial support to the local economy.  An Indie isn’t a chain, doesn’t pay franchise fees to a national (or international organization) and doesn’t bend to the whims of a franchise marketing team.  Indies keep it local and keep it fresh because they are focused on their own bottom line and their community.

When you’re fundraising for your organization or your charitable cause, where do you go for support?  Who gives you the most support?  That’s right.  Local, independent businesses are where you go for support.  Don’t they deserve your support as well?  Drive through Dick’s instead of McDonald’s and hit up the local coffee shop – Kava House or Lake City Perk are both great examples  – trust me.  You’ll be glad you did.

Monday’s Indie!

The Historic Anderson House Hotel has been a feature of Wabasha, Minnesota for over 150 years.  Now featuring a Bed and Breakfast option as well as the opportunity to have a cat bed warmer it certainly does provide a break away from the cookie cutter chain hotel.   Not to mention it’s located about two hours (at the most) south of Minneapolis – Saint Paul and all that offers includin Twins Games, Mall of America and too many other things to mention.  Wabasha itself is the city where Grumpy Old Men was filmed so certainly there are loads of outdoor activities to pursue as well.  Not only fishing, but hiking, biking and canoeing or even just a leisurely drive along the great River Road (US HWY 14 / 61) to see the bluffs and the mighty Mississippi river make this an adventure full of possibilities with the promise of a memorable lodging experience.  Cheers!

Why am I here?

I’m here because I hope to share indies with the world.  What’s an indie?  Well, when I got the idea for this website two years ago, an “Indie” was a non-franchised hospitality business.  Might be a hotel, might be a restaurant – could be anything?  Why? Because I love variety and all chains are the same.  Not that there’s anything wrong with that but they’re just not my first choice – especially when it comes to food.  I don’t go out to dinner enough that I always want the same cookie-cutter type of experience.  I also don’t enjoy dropping hard-earned coin on a disappointing experience.  So I envisioned Discover Indies as a website that would help you find great independent dining and lodging experiences so that my DI readers can be a little less adventurous and still enjoy a fantastic, unique experience.

If you know a great indie, let me know.  Tell me who, what, when, where, and why and your favorite indie might be listed in this blog.  Let me know if you think I should include indie films and indie music too!  If you’re an indie – even better!  I’m happy to promote your business.  It’s what I’m here for.
